Undeterred by the tropical wind and rain that scratched many events @AusChamps 2018 , the Dragon Flyers came away with some very respectable small boat times, close-as-hell finishes and a list of first-time experiences for many of the 30-strong crew.
On Day 4, the winds dashed the Flyers Senior A Women’s hopes of racing over 500 metres, as well as the Mixed Senior B’s chances over 2000 metres. The 2000 metres events scheduled for Day 5 were cancelled.
‘The weather is one thing you can’t control in water sports. And safety has to be the priority,’ Flyers Head Coach, Robyne Kellett said.
‘We achieved a lot over the two days and there were some valiant efforts by every Flyer out there.
‘Our Senior C women achieved the same or better times with nine paddlers as some boats with full crews. And it was great to watch our Senior A girls storm around the one kilometre loop, their strength and determination lifted our spirits at the end of another day of racing cut short.
‘But we're stronger and keener for the season ahead! Bring on the 2018-19 season and AusChamps 2019 at home!’ Robyne added.
It's party time again when the Flyers celebrate their achievements at their annual Awards Dinner on 5 May, after a Come ‘n Try Day on 17 March and a Flyers Hawaiian Hit Out on 24 March.
