Vale Sue Caitcheon

15/05/2017 by Kim

Sue at the 2011 AusDBF National Championships in Canberra.

The cool morning air and sunlight greeted the Dragon Flyers at the small bay outside Clare Holland House on Saturday 6 May 2017.

It was a time to honour a team mate who had shared so much of herself with them for over eight years.

Sue Caitcheon and her family watched as two boats of Flyers paddled and cheered from the water. It was the last time Sue would see her team mates.

In 2009, bitten by the dragon boat bug, Sue jumped from the Canberra Imaging Group corporate crew into the Dragon Flyers.  She soon found her feet and the Flyers knew Sue’s big heart on and off the water was what set her apart. Her attitude to paddling and life was the same. She gave her all.

In 2010, ready to take things up a notch after the Adelaide Nationals, Sue competed with the Flyers in Macau at the Club Crew World Championships (CCWC) and again in 2012 in Hong Kong, her second Flyers CCWC tour.

Sue competed with the Flyers at Nationals from 2011 to 2015 and represented the ACT in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015. Her unstoppable energy was key to what she achieved on and off the water. As merchandise coordinator, Sue helped the then CDBA deliver its highly successful 2011 Nationals.

Sue was always there, always working behind the scenes, always giving. It wasn’t surprising when she received the 2014 Dragon Flyers President’s Award for her achievements, described by President Ian Cooper as above and beyond.

Then in April 2016, Sue’s fighting spirit and the love that surrounded her, helped her cope with the terrible diagnosis of stage 4 cancer. She remained firmly in the Flyers circle, her smile and laughter lit up the room whenever she joined them off the water.

Sadly, cancer took away Sue’s mobility, her independence and eventually, her life.

But as was Sue’s way, throughout it all, she gave life her all.

Her generous spirit and ability to give in so many ways will always remain in the hearts and minds of the Flyers.

Vale Sue Caitcheon.

Afterglow  by Helen Lowrie Marshall was read at the celebration of Sue’s life.

I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one
I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done
I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways
Of happy times
And laughing times
And bright and sunny days
I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun
Of happy memories I leave behind
When day is done.

2017 – The Year of the Pidgeon

30/04/2017 by Kim

2017 Flyers' Flyer Sue Pidgeon with presenters Carmel Smith (L) and John Collins.

The 2016-17 season was dubbed ‘The Year of the Pidgeon’ at the 2017 Dragon Flyers Presentation Dinner at the Hellenic Club last night.

The hard work, dedication and sportsmanship of Sue Pidgeon was recognised and rewarded when she was presented with three Flyers awards.

Sue was voted Club Person of the Year by the Dragon Flyers committee, the winner of the coaching team’s Achievement in Performance Award for her consistently high performance over many years in the sport and named the 2017 Flyers’ Flyer, awarded by the membership.

There were smiles, laughter, music and dancing and the recognition of achievement and excellence by some hard working and inspirational Flyers.

In 2017, it’s congratulations and well done to:

Flyers’ Flyer                                          Sue Pidgeon

Male Paddler of the Year                    Graeme Ainsworth

Female Paddler of the Year               Bronwen North

New Paddler of the Year                    Annie Varley

Achievement in Performance            Sue Pidgeon

Club Person of the Year                      Sue Pidgeon

President’s Award                               Colleen White.

‘The Flyers know how to achieve at the highest level and have fun. I’ve had some amazing opportunities to race at national and international level over the years.  But this year was especially exciting for me,’ Sue said.

‘This year at Nationals, the Flyers won a medal in every event they entered.  The gold in the Senior B women 500 metres was very special.

‘I’m overwhelmed to be given these awards. Thank you so much Flyers!’ Sue added.

Another sensational repechage-less Flyers Nationals

The weather was all over the place @Auschamps2017, but the Dragon Flyers’ 2017 Nationals campaign was anything but.

In a sun-drenched Day 1 start to their Senior B Small Boat campaign, the Flyers Mixed shot off the blocks straight into the 200 metres semis after winning their heat. In the final, the Albury Wodonga locals snatched first, just 0.24 of a second in front of the feisty second placed Flyers.  Who knew it would pretty much be a Flyers vs Albury Wodonga Warriors showdown over the two days...

Back at Day 1, the Flyers Women went to the semis after a close second in their heat. Finishing a nail biting third in the final behind Adelaide Sea Dragons and Albury Wodonga, it was an agonising wait on the beach to find out who got what.

Day 2 just got wetter and wetter. But the Flyers wiped their faces and maintained their repechage-less run and claimed an unbelievably close third in the final of the 500 metres Mixed.

Later, in drenching rain, it was the grit of the Flyers Women that took them cruising through the semis into the final.  Love was all around as the girls won gold in a close-as-hell finish with campaign rivals Albury Wodonga and claimed their 2017 Australian Senior B Small Boat 500 metres crown.

‘Everything we planned just came together. Our strength and conditioning coach Alan Clark worked so hard to get us even stronger.  Our work on the lake in the pouring rain paid off and we handled the conditions like the champions we are,’ Head Coach Robyne Kellett said.

The Flyers finished their 2017 AusDBF Nationals wet, muddy, happily knackered and sometimes, in a Flyers first, speechless.

Next up, it’s time to celebrate at the annual Flyers Awards Dinner this Saturday.  Get ready to party Flyers!

What went down @Auschamps2017:

Senior B Small Boat
Mixed 200m – Silver
Mixed 500m – Bronze

Women 200m – Bronze
Women 500m – Gold.

Flyers welcome new paddlers at Come and Try Day

25/09/2016 by Kim

20160924_114355-2The welcome mat was thrown out and the tent packed with baked goods to greet a bunch of new recruits at the Dragon Flyers Come and Try Day yesterday.

After some paddling basics, the new recruits buddied up with a Flyer and discovered how addictive the sport can be.

‘Come and Try Days are a great way to connect with people and attract them to our sport,’ Flyers President, Bronwen North said.

‘It doesn’t matter if you’ve been fit, you’re returning to sport, or you’re picking up a paddle for the first time. Just have a go!’ she said.

‘We’re planning another Come and Try Day for the coming months, so watch this space for the details,’ Bronwen added.20160924_115843_resized-220160924_114432-2
